For once, I am going to try and keep track of the books I read; moreso the books I finish. 2009 was a poor year for reading, time spent more in sorting out my head. I don’t know what the year ahead holds for me but I hope at least to do some more reading.
The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko [9780099489924]
The first of a trilogy, though I think a fourth book has been written. Vampiric of genre, though not following in the western tradition; just as well as it’s Russian. I’ve long had a modicum of respect for the Russian perspective, not to mention their approach to science fiction and fantasy. The focus is not so much on action as thought and consideration of deed; philosophical rather than bloodthirsty. Easy to read without getting too deep. Some substance though reasonably populist. I enjoyed it and found it a quick read, I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
