Yet another list of books I managed not to buy; some of which I would still like to buy and may well do so but for now at least, the temptation has been resisted.
- Book of Genesis by Robert Crumb [US 9780393061024; UK 9780224078092]
- Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set by Charlaine Harris [9780441018239] – I’ve watched the first half of season 1 of True Blood and am keen both to finish watching the series, and read the books.
- The Book Of Exploration by Ray Howgego [9780297855385]
- Amazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery by David Attenborough [9780300125474]
- Document Z by Andrew Croome [9781741757439]
- The Red Book by CG Jung [9780393065671] – this book looks delicious; effectively an illuminated manuscript by Jung presenting some of his core ideas. Though the local price is at least $100 more than the US/UK price.
- The 2010 Foodies’ Guide to Sydney by Helen Greenwood & John Newton [9781740667609]
- Macquarie Dictionary (5th Edition) by Macquarie Library [9781876429669] – I currently keep the 2nd edition beside the computer and figure it’s long past time I bought a new edition of the Macquarie. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a leatherbound version as there was with the 3rd edition. Admittedly I also have access to the Macquarie online (and OED) via the NLA.
- Einstein’s Mistakes: The Human Failings of Genius by Hans Ohanian [9780393062939]
- A Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich [9780300143324]
- Stuff White People Like by Christian Lander [9781740667029]
- The Bedside Book of Algebra by Michael Willers [9781741965964]
- The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science by Richard Holmes [9780007149520]
- A Brief History of Science (Brief Histories) by Thomas Crump [9781841195520]
- Sophie’s World (Special Limited Edition) by Jostein Gaarder [9780297858812] A nice, spare, edition bound with boards that have the appearance of cardboard. Affordably priced.
- Lovesong (Special Edition) by Alex Miller [9781742372723] – I’m a sucker for special editions, not that anyone’s the least bit surprised. I did like the look and feel of this one and it doesn’t cost much more than the regular hardcover.
- A Dictionary of Modern English Usage: The Classic First Edition by H.W. Fowler [9780199535347] It includes an introduction and notes by David Crystal and sounds fascinating. I came across mention of it via languagehat, one of my favourite blogs.
- The Case for Books: Past, Present, and Future by Robert Darnton [9781586488260]
- Descartes’ Secret Notebook: A True Tale of Mathematics, Mysticism, and the Quest to Understand the Universe by Amir D. Aczel [9780767920346]
- Copernicus’ Secret: How the Scientific Revolution Began by Jack Repcheck [9780743289511]
- Naming Infinity: A True Story of Religious Mysticism and Mathematical Creativity by Loren Graham [9780674032934]
- The Bible in Pictures by Martin Luther [9783836518147]
- Captain America: The Death Of Captain America Omnibus by Ed Brubaker [9780785138068]
- Leonardo’s Notebooks by Leonardo da Vinci [9781579124571]
- A Science Fiction Omnibus edited by Brian Aldiss [9780141188928]
- Books Do Furnish a Room by Leslie Geddes-Brown [9781858944913]
- Samuel Johnson: A Life by David Nokes [9780571226351]
- I Drink Therefore I am: A Philosopher’s Guide to Wine by Roger Scruton [9781847065087]
- The Fourth Part of the World: The epic story of history’s greatest map by Toby Lester [9781861978035]
- Style Manual: for Authors, Editors and Printers edited by DCITA [9780701636470]
- The Complete Adventures of Blinky Bill by Dorothy Wall [9780732284343] – a new edition and it looks spiffy.
Not a bad looking list at all and disturbingly, far too many continue to tempt. With that said, resisting these has meant I was able to buy the Don Quixote and for that, I cannot complain at all.
